Saving Money

The hot summer weather in St. Louis, Missouri, can make you feel miserable, especially if your HVAC system breaks down or has to be replaced. Maintaining your AC regularly helps you avoid expensive, inconvenient breakdowns, save money on utility bills, and extend your system’s life. You can save by changing your air filter often, protecting your outdoor HVAC unit, and having a professional check for problems.

Change Your Air Filter

A dirty air filter can make your air conditioner less efficient and increase your utility bills. It can also spread dirt and other contaminants from your ductwork and the rest of your home to your air conditioner, causing costly mechanical problems. You should check your air filter every month and replace it if it’s dirty or more than three months old.

Protect Your Outdoor HVAC Unit

Grass clippings, dirt, twigs, and other debris can accumulate on your outdoor air conditioning unit, blocking the air flow and causing breakdowns. Check your outdoor unit often and make sure it has two or three feet of space around it on all sides. You can rinse it with a garden hose to remove debris, but equipment like a power washer could damage your AC. In fall, cover your unit to protect it until you start using it again in spring. An awning over your AC will give it extra protection all year and save money and energy by providing shade.

Use a Professional

You can take care of a lot of AC maintenance by yourself, but you should have your air conditioner inspected by a professional at least once per year. That way, you can find common problems like low refrigerant levels or leaks in your ductwork before you need a major repair or your power bills start increasing.
